The device has two poles (8, 9), and a safety device (3) attached to one of the poles. A switch (5) is switched between the other pole and the safety device. The former pole is short circuitable with the latter pole over the safety device by the switch. Interchange points (6) are connected with the poles by contactors (4), respectively, where the interchange points are arranged at housing (1). The interchange points are short circuit when the contactors and the switch are closed. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating an energy storage device from an electrical system of a motor vehicle.
