The method involves monitoring a transportation region of a transportation unit (101) by a three dimensional time-of-light camera system (105). The camera system is connected with an evaluation unit (107) such that a depth image of the transportation region is determined. Covering density and/or passenger distribution of the transportation region are determined based on the depth image. A direction to the transportation region with low covering density is signalized to a passenger (102) by a signaling device that is arranged in an interior of the transportation unit. An independent claim is also included for a system for detecting a passenger distribution in a transportation unit i.e. vehicle, in public passenger traffic.
