<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a transition line of good linearity while generating high magnetic field strength, and to prevent recorded information on an adjacent track from being deteriorated due to skew. <P>SOLUTION: A perpendicular magnetic recording head is constituted so that film thickness in the down track direction of a main magnetic pole increases as it goes away from an air bearing surface, and a central position of a part (air-bearing-surface part) exposed to the air bearing surface of the main magnetic pole in the film thickness direction may be located in a trailing side with respect to the central position of the part having the largest film thickness in the part (set-back part) which is set back from the air bearing surface in the direction of film thickness.
