<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of calculating an equivalent refractive index of a photonic crystal which is a periodic structure of refractive index. <P>SOLUTION: The technique belongs to the fields of light wave and electromagnetic wave engineering. First, the complex reflection spectrum of a photonic crystal layer of a limited periodicity is calculated by using an existing numerical solution such as the FDTD method. Next the envelope of this reflection spectrum is extracted, and by using it, an equivalent refractive index is calculated. As a result, the equivalent refractive index of the photonic crystal which is a quantity relating directly to a reflection phenomenon at the boundary surface between a uniform medium and the photonic crystal can be acquired without a room for arbitrariness. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
