PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for treads, which can improve wet performance, low fuel cost and abrasion resistance in good balance, and to provide a pneumatic tire having a tread using the rubber composition. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for treads comprises a rubber component, silica and an aromatic vinyl polymer, wherein the rubber component contains an epoxidized natural rubber; the aromatic vinyl monomer unit content of the aromatic vinyl polymer is≥95 mass%; and the content of the silica and the content of the aromatic vinyl polymer is 5 to 150 pts.mass and 2 to 100 pts.mass, respectively, per 100 pts.mass of the rubber component.
