PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal material capable of increasing a tilt angle in electroclinic effect. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 30 containing a liquid crystal material is inserted between a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) array substrate 10 and an opposite substrate 20. The liquid crystal material includes a core portion and an organosilane structural portion vis-a-vis across an asymmetric carbon atom (C<SP>*</SP>). In the core portion, one or two electrophilic group(s) is(are) introduced in a phenylene group connected to the asymmetric carbon atom via an oxo group. The liquid crystal material has a structure wherein the asymmetric carbon atom is a chiral center as a whole, showing smectic A phase. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
