PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polyester which has good color tone and heat resistance, and has good texture when formed into a fiber product as a binder fiber, and less decreases the bond strength at high temperatures, and to provide a polyester. SOLUTION: The polyester including of 70-90 mol% terephthalic acid and 10-30 mol% adipic acid as dicarboxylic acid components and 30-60 mol% ethylene glycol and 40-70 mol% 1,4-butanediol as glycol components is produced. In this instance, 1×10<SP>-4</SP>to 10×10<SP>-4</SP>mol phosphoric acid per mole of 1,4-butanediol and the acid components of the polyester is added to an esterified product composed of terephthalic acid, adipic acid, and ethylene glycol to perform depolymerization reaction and thereafter 1×10<SP>-4</SP>to 10×10<SP>-4</SP>mol titanium compound per mol of the acid components of the polyester is added to the reaction product as a polycondensation catalyst to perform polycondensation reaction.
