PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide glass ideally suitable as neutral glass, having chemical durability to be produced by a conventional melting system at a temperature ideally not so high and containing no boron oxide. SOLUTION: The boron-free neutral glass having a composition (by wt.% and expressed in term of oxide) of SiO<SB>2</SB>of 65-72, Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>of 11-17, Na<SB>2</SB>O of 0.1-8, MgO of 3-8, CaO of 4-12, ZnO of 0-10 and the ratio (CaO/MgO) of 1.4-1.6, having hydrolysis resistance in accordance with DIN ISO 719 in class 1, acid resistance in accordance of DIN 12116 and alkali resistance in accordance of DIN ISO 695 in at least class 2 is disclosed.
