1,022,603. Spring suspension for vehicles. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. Feb. 19, 1964 [March 7, 1963], No. 7021/64. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] Each steerable wheel 5 of a vehicle is journalled on a stub shaft 4 carried by a telescopic strut comprising a shock-absorber 1 with a downward extension 3 rotatably connected to a transverse guide link 10, and an upwardly extending rod 2 connected to the vehicle frame by a rubber body 11 which is arranged concentrically about the rod 2 to provide torsional and axial resilience and adopts a heat-shaped crosssection under the static load of the vehicle and the pressure of clamping members 15 securing the body 11 to the frame. Prior to installation (Fig. 3, not shown) the rubber body 11 comprises a conical portion 11<SP>11</SP> merging into a beadlike portion 11<SP>1</SP>. A metal bush 12 is vulcanized within the body 11 for engagement with a tapered portion 2<SP>1</SP> of the rod 2. Upon assembly between the clamping member 15 and a shoulder 13 on the rod 2 the body 11 is precompressed radially and its effective cross-section (defined by the lines 16, 20) is tapered to resist axial deflection progressively in both compression and shear. To enhance the progressive characteristic the edges of the clamping members 15 and the shoulder 13 are bent or rounded as shown. The radial precompression may be such as to prevent stress reversal at the upper surface 21 of the body 11 or the surface 21 may be formed with an annular groove 22. |
