A silicone rubber contact lens (e.g. as prepared according to Specification 922, 871) is rendered hydrophilic by first dipping into a solution of an alkyl titanate Ti(OR) 4 where R si a C 2 to C 4 alkyl radical (especially isopropyl) in an organic solvent. After drying the lens is extracted with hot (e.g.boiling) water and finally immersed in cold water. The lens may be subjected to solvent extraction, and washing by detergent before treatment with the alkyl titanate. The hyrophilic lenses of the invention maintain a continuous tear film on contact with the dye and may be worn for long periods without discomfort.</p> |
