<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disease name encoding method and a disease name encoding program, for efficiently encoding a disease name recorded by a character string. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A management computer 21 produces a dictionary (an electronic dictionary) by use of a modifier master of a modifier master data storage part 32 and a disease name master of a disease name master data storage part 31. A constituent character of an unencoded disease name is extracted one by one, a vocabulary candidate recording the extracted constituent character as a head character is extracted, and a candidate list associating an appearance position of the constituent character in the unencoded disease name with the vocabulary candidate is generated. Combination of the vocabulary candidates properly expressing the whole disease name is generated by use of the vocabulary candidate included in the candidate list on the basis of the appearance position of the constituent character in the unencoded disease name and the number of characters of the vocabulary candidate, and the unencoded disease name is encoded on the basis of the generated combination.
