4-Methylpent-1-ene is obtained by dimerizing propylene in an inert hydrocarbon (e.g. a high boiling diesel oil) in the presence of lithium obtained by reacting an organo-lithium compound LiR (in which R is aryl, cycloalkyl or C2- 18 alkyl) with another alkali metal precipitated on finely divided carbon. The carbon may be acetylene black, lamp black, flame black, gas black, or, less preferably, finely powdered graphite or activated carbon. The catalyst is formed by melting sodium or potassium in a heated dispersion of finely divided carbon in inert hydrocarbon, cooling, and adding a suspension of organo-lithium compound in the same hydrocarbon. The resulting mixture may be used as such or the formed lithium separated and used alone.ALSO:Metallic lithium catalysts are prepared by replacement of the lithium in organometallic compounds LiR (in which R is aryl, cycloalkyl, or C2-18 alkyl) by sodium or potassium dispersed on finely divided carbon. Sodium or potassium is melted into a dispersion of carbon in inert hydrocarbon, the mixture cooled, and a dispersion of organo-lithium compound in the same hydrocarbon is added. The final mixture may be used as such or the formed metallic lithium separated therefrom and used alone. |
