PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly estimate the direction of an object having symmetry horizontally, vertically, or the like. SOLUTION: An estimation device includes: an image input unit 2 for input of an image containing a face having symmetry; a storage 3 for storing data for face detection generated from feature value data for face detection extracted from front-view images of faces, and storing information for direction estimation while associating the directions of the faces with information on feature value distribution for direction estimation; an object detection part 4 for extracting feature quantities for face detection from the input image, and setting a face image region of the input image by using the extracted feature value data and the data for face detection in the storage 3 to detect a face; an estimation part 5 for estimating the direction of an object, which extracts information on feature value distribution for direction estimation based on feature value data for estimating the direction of the face concerning the face image region, verifies the extracted information on feature value distribution with the information on feature value distribution for direction estimation being stored in the storage 3, and estimates the direction associated with the most approximate information on feature value distribution for direction estimation as the direction of the face; and an output unit 6 for output of the estimation result.
