PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material determination method and a material determination apparatus for comparatively simply determining a material in a relatively-short working time even if a worker has a low skill level. SOLUTION: In the material determination method for determining the material of a pipe 1, a peripheral border section 4 in the thickness direction as a cut surface during boring is observed out of the surface of a bore piece 3 obtained by boring the pipe 1, so that the material of the pipe 1 is determined.
