PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve adhesion strength between glass and a sealing metal at a sealing part of a high-pressure discharge lamp constituted of the glass and the sealing metal. SOLUTION: On the surface of the sealing metal (for example, molybdenum foil) 14 embedded in the sealing part 13 of the high-pressure discharge lamp, a laser beam with a pulse width of 2×10<SP>-11</SP>seconds to 1×10<SP>-9</SP>seconds emitted from a picosecond laser oscillator is irradiated to carry out surface treatment. By this, a fine surface structure is formed on the surface of the molybdenum foil, and the adhesion strength between the glass and the molybdenum foil of the sealing part 13 is enhanced. As a result, even if a temperature of the sealing part 13 rises and falls by repetition of lighting on/off, such a trouble as peeling off of the sealing metal from the glass hardly occurs, thereby enabling extension of the lamp service life. Moreover, even if this is applied to the high-pressure discharge lamp equipped with a sealing part 33 having a rod-like sealing metal constituted of tungsten or the like, a similar effect can be obtained.
