In a method of explosively bonding metal layers the surfaces are finished, prior to bonding, to a centre-line average height of less than 0À7 microns. The method is applicable to the bonding of titanium, zirconium, tantalum, copper, aluminium, or an alloy based thereon, stainless steel, " Hastelloy " (Registered Trade Mark), " Monel " (Registered Trade Mark), nickel, nickel based alloy or steel to steel and is stated to inhibit the formation of a hard and brittle layer at the bond and thereby to increase the exfoliation strength. |
