PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal scanner that selects a suitable pinhole diameter according to the characteristic of an objective lens to be used, the type of a specimen, and a required optical characteristic (image resolution, brightness, and so on). SOLUTION: In the confocal scanner of pinhole disk system, a pinhole disk is provided with a plurality of pinholes of different diameters. In addition, the scanner includes a pinhole selecting means with a light transmission opening for passing light through only one pinhole of a given diameter among the pinholes, thereby selecting the diameter of the pinhole for carrying out optical scan.
