<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object detection apparatus which suppresses misdetection of object. <P>SOLUTION: The object detecting apparatus 10 divides a detection region in a prescribed angle range from own vehicle into a plurality of vertical angle regions and horizontal-angle regions. The object detector 10 includes a segment generation section 32 for classifying a plurality of reflection points, detected corresponding to electromagnetic waves dispatched toward the plurality of horizontal angle regions each into a plurality of segments, based on the positions of the reflection points for the plurality of vertical angle regions each; a target object generating section 33 for generating target objects constituting segments which exist within a prescribed position range and including peculiar targets; a course estimating section 34 for estimating the course of own vehicle, including prescribed width according to the width of own vehicle; an overlapping determining section 35 for determining whether at least one segment of segments for composing the target objects overlaps with the course; and an object detection section 37.
