PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop image forming means for full-color printing without performing wasted drive, when monochrome printing is carried out, in an image forming apparatus capable of monochrome printing and full-color printing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has: charging means; electrostatic latent image forming means; and a developing means having toner. The image forming apparatus includes: a first image carrier for forming and carrying a visualized image by a developing means; a second image carrier and third image carrier for carrying the visualized image formed by the first image carrier; and a conveying means for conveying transfer paper between the second and third image carriers. There are a plurality of first image carriers, and first visualized images are respectively formed on the surfaces of the respective image carriers with different-colored toner. Furthermore, the image forming apparatus has: a fourth image carrier for forming and carrying a monochrome image which is independent of the first, second and third image carriers; and a transfer material conveying means for conveying a transfer material between the fourth and third image carriers.
