PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium which enables reliable and fast removal of a mask layer. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the magnetic recording medium having magnetically-separated magnetic recording patterns 2a includes: processes of forming a magnetic layer 2 on a nonmagnetic substrate 1; forming a dissolution layer 3 on the magnetic layer 2; forming the mask layer 4 on the dissolution layer 3; subjecting the dissolution layer 3 and the mask layer 4 to patterning into shapes corresponding to the magnetic recording patterns 2a; partially reforming or removing the magnetic layer 2 using the mask layer 4 subjected to patterning; and subjecting the dissolution layer 3 to wet dissolution with chemicals and removing the dissolution layer 3 with the mask layer 4 from the magnetic layer 2.
