PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern setting apparatus or the like for printing characters of a high use frequency in a character string with favorable visibility. SOLUTION: An auxiliary storage part 13 stores pattern data which express patterns of characters by the arrangement of dots on a matrix. A CPU 11 acquires designation data form the outside for designating engraved characters, selects pattern data corresponding to the designation data from the pattern data stored by the auxiliary storage part 13, and outputs the selected pattern data to an engraving unit 20 which engraves the pattern expressed by the pattern data. Predetermined characters are designated to be objects that can be engraved by an enlargement pattern. At least one of the pattern data stored while being made corresponding to the respective objective characters expresses an enlarged character pattern.
