PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydroxyalkyl starch derivative. SOLUTION: The method comprises a step to make hydroxyalkyl starch of formula (I) react at its reducing end which is not oxidized prior to the reaction, with a compound of formula (II): R'NH-R" (wherein R1, R2and R3are independently hydrogen or a linear or branched hydroxyalkyl group, and wherein either R' or R" or R' and R" comprise at least one functional group X reactive with at least one another compound prior to or after the reaction of (I) and (II)).
