The present invention relates to a drug delivery device for dispensing of a dose of a medicinal product, comprising: a housing (12, 14); a drive mechanism (16) comprising an axially displaceable piston rod (88) to act on a piston (20) of a cartridge (17) containing the medicinal product to be dispensed, wherein the housing (12) is adapted to support a piercing element (29) which is adapted to penetrate a distal end face (24) of the cartridge (17) exclusively on demand. Furthermore, the drug delivery device comprises means for displacing the cartridge (17) from a proximal stop position to a distal stop position in an axial direction and with respect to the housing (12), wherein in the distal stop position, the cartridge (17) is connected to the piercing element (29) and wherein in the proximal stop position, the cartridge (17) is disconnected from the piercing element (29) such that a fluid transfer between inside volume of the cartridge (17) and the piercing element (29) is interrupted. |
