A knot tying device for a baling machine has the jaw 23 so mounted that it is capable of a slight translatory movement as well as a pivotal movement about its pivot 34, Figs. 7 and 8, to enable it to accommodate twine of different thickness. For this purpose the jaw 23 has a slot 36 through which the pivot 34 passes to retain the jaw in a slot 33 of the hook. The hook is secured by its shank 43 in the rotary shaft 24 and accommodates a spring 38 which bears on the jaw 23 and urge it downwardly so that the upper-end of the slot is pressed against the pivot, Fig. 8. If thin twine is engaged it passes between the hook and jaw which has the slope 35 of the portion 40 bearing on the bridge portion 44 of the hook sudh that a lesser pull on the twine is required to release it compared with a heavier twine. In the latter case, Fig. 7, the twine causes the jaw to ride up to press the pivot against the lower end of the slot and simultaneously alter the angle of the slop 35 relative to the twine such that a stronger pull is now required to release it from the jaw and hook. |
