Carbon black is produced by injecting a carbon black producing feedstock into an ignited turbulent mixture of fuel gas and combustion air in a cylindrical reactor, in the presence of sonic energy waves generated in one of the reactants, cooling the effluent and recovering the product. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed. The air and fuel gas may be ignited in a cylindrical first zone, the burning mixture then being passed to a cylindrical reaction zone in an axial direction and the feedstock injected into the zone by means of sonic energy waves. Alternatively, the fuel gas may be passed into the reaction zone by means of sonic energy waves, the feedstock and air may then be injected into the zone and the fuel and air ignited. The feedstock may be a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon. The combustion air may be preheated by passing it through an annular space around the reaction zone which is thereby cooled. The sonic wave source may be one or more sonic wave nozzles for injecting the feedstock, Figs. 6 and 9 (not shown), which may be placed off the axis of the reaction zone. |
