A new means is provided with which it is possible to array animal cells separately from one another on the surface of a substrate without requiring the use of microwells. Disclosed are: a method for preparing a substrate for arraying animal cells thereon, the method comprising the following steps (1) to (3); and a method for preparing a substrate having animal cells arrayed thereon, the method comprising the following steps (1) to (4). (1) The step of preparing a substrate which comprises an electrode base having on a surface thereof, adsorption surfaces disposed in an array arrangement. (2) The step of causing the electrode surface and adsorption surfaces of the substrate to adsorb an extracellular matrix. (3) The step of applying a slight potential to the electrode to desorb the extracellular matrix adherent to the electrode surface and thereby obtain a substrate having the extracellular matrix adsorbed on the adsorption surfaces. (4) The step of incubating animal cells on the surface of the substrate obtained in the step (3), thereby obtaining a substrate having animal cells adherent to the adsorption surfaces.
