[Also in Division D1] A shaped article is made by impregnating a needled sheet of orientated continuous synthetic filaments with a curable synthetic resin, then pressing and deforming the sheet under conditions which will cure the resin. The sheet can be hot-calendered prior to needling. The resin impregnant may be a solution of polyester, phenoplast, aminoplast, melamine-formaldehyde resin or a cross-linkable polyamide. The filaments can be made of polyethylene terephthalate, isotactic polypropylene, polycaproamide, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride, cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile or polyvinyl alcohol. The sheet can be pressed into a flat or contoured product, e.g. under 25 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> at 130‹ or 160‹ C. In Example 1 impregnated sheets are superposed prior to pressing. |
