1,176,080. Pipe joints. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 15 Sept., 1967 [27 Sept., 1966], No. 42136/67. Heading F2G. A hermetic coupling in a liquid gas transfer line comprises inner and outer duct sections 1, 2, 3, 4 bounding vacuum spaces with the inner ducts 1, 3 inter-engaged and bearing first and second sealing members 5, 7, sealing means 18 between first and second flanges 10, 11 disposed respectively at the end of outer duct 2 and on a sleeve 12 fixed to outer duct 4, bellows 13, 15 bounding spaces communicating respectively with the spaces between the inner and outer duct sections and means co-operating with the first and second sealing members 5, 7 to bound a first chamber 9 communicating with a second chamber 17 disposed between the first and second bellows. When a liquid gas, e.g. helium, starts flowing a slight initial leakage into chamber 9 is evaporated on contact with the walls of the latter and any leakage between the sealing members 5, 7 expands in chamber 17. The pressure rises in chamber 17 and an equilibrium is established between the pressures in ducts 1, 3, chamber 9 and chamber 17. The union elements are of metal joined by welding and the duct sections are of stainless steel. |
