A method for making an optical device may include applying at least one precursor for a curable index matching elastomeric solid layer (40) onto an end face (33) of an optical waveguide device (31). The optical waveguide device (31) may include a core (35) having a core index of refraction (n1), and a cladding (37) surrounding the core and having a cladding index of refraction (n2) different than the core index of refraction. The method may further include curing the at least one precursor to form the index matching elastomeric solid layer (40) on the end face (33) to have an index of refraction matching the index of refraction of at least the core (35).
