An edge window setting unit sets edge window (1) and detects an edge (2) of workpiece (w) e.g. cable. An element setting unit sets several window elements (10) in one edge window set by the setting unit. An edge detection unit scans each window element and detects the edges of the window element. A calculation unit obtain an edge related information e.g. edge position or maximum edge width, from the detected edge.
