A continuous process for preparing fishmeal from fish or fish waste material comprises preheating the material in preheater 10, disintegrating the material in boiler 11, expressing most of the oil-containing liquid from the material in presser 13 and removing it from presser 11, drying the material in drier 12 in which the material is dried and carried by a helically rotating flow of hot gas, and into which expressed liquid from which has been removed the oils, is introduced in finely divided form by nozzles 35, separating the dried material from the hot gas in cyclone 19 and packing the material. The preheater 10 and disintegrator 11 are heated by hot gases passing in jackets surrounding these sections. The material is conveyed through sections 10 and 11 by screw conveyer means. The liquid expressed by presser 13 is filtered at filter 24, heated at 26 by vapours evolved in the distintegrating section 11, further heated at 29 by hot gas passing from the jacket surrounding preheater 10, and has its oil fraction removed at separator 33 from where it is conveyed to drier 12. The hot gases are supplied by combustion chamber 14, the gas which is passed through the jacket of preheater 10 being exhausted and the gas used in the jacket of boiler 11 and drier 12 being recirculated. |
