[Also in Division H3] A magnetic storage device comprising a rodshaped non-magnetic conductive substrate coated with a thin magnetic film has a non- magnetic conductive overcoating of gold or silver deposited over the film of magnetic material, the thickness of the overcoating being no greater than that of the film or 5000 Š whichever is the less. The rod 15, Fig. 2, comprises a beryllium copper substrate rod 15a on which is coated a thin magnetic film 15b which may be a bilayer film. In accordance with the invention a layer 16 of gold or silver having the thickness stated above is electroplated on to the magnetic film 15b and a protective coating of urethane resin may then be applied. The insulated helical digit conductors 18 are then applied to the rod and soldered at the end 25 to the layer 16 and substrate 15a, the wire 18a passing to another rod in the memory, Fig. 1. Winding 18a<SP>1</SP> is a digit conductor from another rod and is dip soldered by connection 35. The matrix comprises a plurality of stacked plates P 1 -P 40 containing solenoid windings 10 arranged in series-connected rows, with respectively located windings in different planes aligned so as to provide a continuous bore 10a, the rods 15 being inserted into a respective bore. The solenoid windings 10 serve as word windings and the helical windings 18 as sense/digit windings, I D showing the path of the digit conductor through a device. The gold layer improves the squareness of the hysteresis characteristic. |
