A blind rivet setting tool first draws the mandrel 1 into the rivet while the reaction force is applied to the head 10 of the rivet, then transfers the reaction force to a locking ring which is swaged into a recess 4 in the rivet head and applies a further pull to break the mandrel. The mandrel 15 is pulled by a piston 24, the piston-rod 23 of which is attached to a collet 16 which contains gripping jaws 12. The jaws 12 are closed by conical faces 19 on the collet 16 under the action of a spring 30. The broken mandrel is ejected by a spring loaded pin 17. During this pull the reaction force is transmitted through the tubular body 1, having an anvil 4, to the head 10 of the rivet. The pulling is terminated when a valve stem 67 on the piston 24 engages on adjustable stop secured to the end cover 33 of the housing 32. Movement of the valve stem 67 allows pressure fluid to flow along a conduit 68 in the valve stem 67 through the hollow stop 58 and along a passage 77 to a space 78 behind the end 44 of a shift piston 31, causing the piston 31 to move to the left (Fig. 3). The piston 31 engages a tubular sleeve 2 which moves an anvil 3 which contacts the locking ring and thus transfers the reaction force to the locking ring. Further movement of the piston 31 causes the anvil 3 to engage the end 4 of the tubular body 1, which can slide in the end cap 37 of the housing 32, thus causing the tubular body 4 and anvil 3 to move relative to the pulling means to break the mandrel. |
