Radiological treatment laser device and related surgical apparatus

An innovative device is proposed for the radiological treatment of tumours, in particular per irradiating a surgical site according to the so-called IORT (IntraOperative Radiological Therapy) technique. It operates with a not-high vacuum, and it allows to physically placing the laser source away from the focusing means, thus allowing to provide a small sized, easily handlable device that can be used in the operating room and easily substituted for maintenance, therefore without interfering with the use of the room itself. The apparatus provides a relativistic electron generator having a kinetic energy and average current suitable for IORT and having: a laser source (2) for generating a laser beam (5); a nozzle (10) for vacuum emitting a supersonic gas jet (50); focusing means for focusing (11) said laser beam (5) on said pressurized gas jet (50) nearby the nozzle (10); and adjustment means for adjusting the electrons kinetic energy according to the respective therapeutic needs by means of varying the gas jet (50) thickness (b). The accelerating device is miniaturized and operates in high efficiency laser acceleration conditions experimentally determined by the inventor.
