A carbon body is coated with an FeSi alloy containing by weight 5-45% Fe, 54.9-94% Si, and 0.1-10% of at least one of Na, K, Mg, Ca, B, Al, Ti, Zr, Mn, P and O. The body, e.g. a graphite electrode or crucible, may be coated by immersion in a melt of the alloy, or by flame spraying followed by heating at 1000-1400 DEG C. An intermediate layer of Fe-Si-C is said to form. If the latter heat treatment is effected in atmospheric O2, a vitreous surface layer containing 70-85% SiO2 and some FeO, is formed.ALSO:A carbon body is coated with an FeSi alloy containing by weight 5-45% Fe, 54.9-94% Si, and 0.1-10% of at least one of Na, K, Mg, Ca, B, Al, Ti, Zr, Mn, P and O.
