A portable microwave or millimetre wave arrangement is provided for remotely detecting one or more dimensions of a metallic or dielectric object 116. The object 116 may comprise a weapon or an explosive concealed on or in the body of a person, within a container, or in an item of luggage. Microwave or mm wave radiation having a first polarization is directed 106 towards a target 116, and radiation having a first polarization, and a second polarization transverse to the first polarization, is received 108 from the target and detected in the frequency domain. The directed radiation is swept over a predetermined range of frequencies, and the detected signal is transformed into the time domain, such that one or more dimensions of a detected object 116 can be determined. In another aspect, a means for remote detection and/or identification of a metallic threat object using late time response (LTR) signals is disclosed (see figures 19a-19c). |
