PURPOSE: A negative electrode material for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries is provided to enable the production of a negative electrode suitable for lithium-ion secondary batteries and to ensure improved safety and cycle performance compared with conventional negative electrode materials. CONSTITUTION: A negative electrode material for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries comprises at least: particles wherein silicon nanoparticles are dispersed in silicon oxide(silicon oxide particles); and a metal oxide coating formed on a surface of the silicon oxide particles. The metal oxide coating comprises an oxide of one or more elements selected from the group consisting of magnesium(Mg), aluminum(Al), titanium(Ti), and silicon(Si).
