A separable laminate construction, Fig. 4, comprises first and second layers 46, 41, respectively, and a layer 45 of pressure sensitive 7 adhesive disposed between the layers 46, 41 and adhering said layers together, the layer 46 being impact sensitive, i.e. carrying a liquid substance contained in a multitude of minute capsules, which rupture when subjected to impact to form an image in the area of impact, the adhesive being more securely attached to the layer 41 than the layer 46 so that the adhesive adheres to the layer 41 when the layers 46, 41 are separated from each other. As described, the layers 41, 46 are of paper, the layer 41 forming with the adhesive 45 a self-adhesive label and the layer 46 containing two colourless chemicals one of which is contained in the said minute rupturable capsules. When the layer 41 is embossed or typed by an impact method the capsules in layer 46 rupture over the area of impact so that the two chemicals mix to form a coloured area in the area of impact so forming on the layer 46 a copy of what appears on the label. To promote adherence between the adhesive and layer 41 and discourage adherence between the adhesive and layer 46 the layer 41 has a coating 44 of adhesive attractant and the layer 46 has a coating 48 of adhesive repellant. In a second embodiment a transparent glassine release liner is adhered to the impact sensitive layer between it and the adhesive and carries the adhesive repellant coating. In either of the aforesaid embodiments the impact sensitive layer 46 may carry on its exposed face a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive and either a paper release liner or a layer of impact sensitive material or a layer of glassine adhered to a layer of impact sensitive material; appropriate coatings of adhesive attractant and repellant being included. The layers 41, 45 may constitute labels 13, Fig. 1, arranged in rows on a strip 11, the other layer(s) extending beyond the edges 24, 25 of the labels and having holes 28 which enable the strip 11 to be fed through a printing machine. In another embodiment labels are arranged in a single row on a backing strip which is of the same width or wider than the labels. |
