PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting a media id of a light scribe disc are provided to scan successive media ID fields of a saw tooth field in a fixed state of the focus lens position. CONSTITUTION: A controller confirms the duty ratio of a detected defect signal while scanning of a saw tooth field(S12). The final saw tooth within the saw tooth is detected while moving the focus lens position of an optical pick-up in order to make a duty ratio 50% to 50%(S13, S14). If the final saw tooth is detected, the controller detects a media ID through a successive media ID field scan of the saw field at the fixed state of the saw focus lens position(S15~S17).
