PURPOSE: A disazo compound is provided to ensure excellent light resistance and initial polarizing performance, and to manufacture a polarizing film with light resistance when used as a polarizing element. CONSTITUTION: A disazo compound or a salt thereof are represented by chemical formula (I), wherein A represents 4-sulfophenyl or 6,8-disulfo-2-naphtyl, one of R1 and R2 represents hydrogen and the other represents methyl. In disazo compound, R1 represents methyl and R2 represents hydrogen.
