In a battery lantern the bulb 33 is mounted in a socket which is movable by screw and nut means between a first position, in which the bulb is at the focus of a reflector 26 and the lantern emits a beam, and a second position in which the bulb is spaced from the focus and the lantern emits diffused light. The bulb holder comprises a metal cylinder 37, threaded at one end to receive the bulb and secured at the other end to a base member 41, and a plastics centre piece 34, the member 41 having a flange 39 with four peripheral cut-outs (47, Fig. 6, not shown) which receive longitudinally extending shoulders (48) on the inner surface of a cylindrical centre portion 28 of the lantern housing so that the bulb holder can slide without rotation in the portion 28. A screw member 43 engages a helical slot (42) in the base member 41 and is mounted on a rotatable knob 44, 21 so that rotation of the knob causes axial movement of the bulb holder. |
