Disclosed is a multilayer gypsum panel including: -a core including gypsum and a high-temperature shrinkage-resistant material, said core being formed into a panel having at least two opposing faces and two opposing edges; -an expanding layer covering at least a portion of the group consisting of one or more of said faces, one or more of said edges and combinations thereof, said expanding layer including a gypsum matrix having a density higher than said core and a first intumescent material; and -a facing material covering at least a portion of said expandable layer. A method of making the above mentioned gypsum panel is also disclosed.
