PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high output/high efficiency semiconductor light emitting device with a reflector by enhancing utilization efficiency of light exiting a semiconductor light emitting element. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor light emitting device, position and size of a submount, a light emitting element and a reflector satisfy following relation shown by formula (A) on the cross-section perpendicular to a substrate passing the center of the semiconductor light emitting element; r-ls≤(hs-d)×(ls-lc)/hc (A), where r, ls and lc are the distance from the sag portion of the reflector, the outer circumference of the submount and the outer circumference of the semiconductor light emitting element to the center of the semiconductor light emitting element, respectively, hs and d are the height of the submount and the sag portion of the reflector, and hc is the height of the upper surface of the semiconductor light emitting element from the upper surface of the submount.
