Hydratable keratin compositions

Provided is a composition comprising an absorbent keratin material obtained from a hair filament, wherein the absorbent material is substantially free of water soluble keratin proteins and peptides and wherein the material is produced by saturating the filament with aqueous solvent to obtain an expanded filament and subsequently removing the water by sublimation to obtain an absorbent material. The material if useful for water absorbent films, bandages or environmental liquid absorbents.
