PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of easily detecting impurities, such as by-products, included in carnitine with high sensitivity. SOLUTION: The method of detecting a trace amount of impurities included in a carnitine mixture includes a process of preparing an alcohol solution, containing a mixture including impurities and carnitine, and inorganic salts (I); a process of separating an insoluble substance deposited in the alcohol solution (II); and a process of detecting the impurities, by analyzing constituents of the insoluble matter (III).
