PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reaction vessel excellent in resistance to corrosion caused by both a liquid phase and a gaseous phase of a hydrolysate produced when preparing methionine by hydrolyzing M-hydantoin in the presence of potassium carbonate, even when performing the hydrolysis at a higher temperature. SOLUTION: A method for preparing methionine comprises hydrolyzing 5-(β-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin in the presence of potassium carbonate in water in the reaction vessel of which an inner surface is made of stainless steel comprising 21.0-30.0 wt.% Cr, 4.5-11.0 wt.% Ni, 1.0-5.0 wt.% Mo, 0.05-0.50 wt.% N and 2.05-2.5 wt.% W.
