PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a latone compound, by which the polycyclic lactone compound having a hydroxyl group can industrially efficiently be produced. SOLUTION: The method for producing the lactone compound comprises reacting a bridged cyclic carboxylic acid having an endocyclic double bond at theγ,δ-positions, such as methyl 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2-carboxylate, or an ester thereof with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an organic acid having a pKa of 0 to 3.75 to produce the lactone compound represented by formula (2) (wherein, A is a 1 to 6C alkylene group, O or S; the ring represented in the formula may have one or more substituents except the substituents shown in the formula).
