PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can suppress deterioration of durability of a toner image carrying belt and suppressing speed variation of the toner image carrying belt when a sheet type member enters a transfer nip. SOLUTION: When it is unnecessary to suppress the speed variation of a primary transfer area T1 of an intermediate transfer belt 2, such as, when an image is not formed or when an image is formed on plain paper, a bite amount of an abutting roller 41 at the intermediate transfer belt 2 is adjusted to 0[mm] by a bite amount adjusting mechanism 35. Meanwhile, when it is necessary to suppress the speed variation of the primary transfer area T1 of the intermediate transfer belt 2, such as, when an image is formed on cardboard, the abutting roller 41 is allowed to bite at the intermediate transfer belt 2 by a predetermined amount by the bite amount adjusting mechanism 35.
