The method involves increasing fresh air mass in a combustion chamber (12), during detection of knocking occurrence, and obtaining increment of fresh air mass by increasing charging-air pressure. An inert gas ratio is adjusted by detection of the knocking occurrence. The knocking occurrence is detected by a knock sensor (16), and exhaust gas recirculation rates are adjusted by changing of the fresh air mass. Stratified lean fuel operation is temporarily stopped and is changed in an alternative homogeneous operating mode, while occurring of the knocking occurrence.
