In a continuous method of moulding reinforced resin bodies porous preforms e.g. glass fibre preforms, are subsequentially impregnated with a predetermined quantity of resin and positioned in a compression mould from which each moulded article e.g. a tray, table top, seat or flower pot, is removed. The impregnation is effected by two nozzles 63, 64 supplied from a metering unit 52 and moved over the preform in guides 68, 69a to distribute the resin in a predetermined pattern. The movement of the preform from the supply conveyor 16 to the impregnation station 13 and to the compression mould 14 is effected by the action of two sets of interdigitated tines 26, 40 and a reciprocable stop 44 controlled by pnuematic cylinders 28, 32, 33, and 36. The moulded article is removed from the press by a reciprocable shoe 85 which carries a vacuum line detector 86, which controls a switch in the electro-pnuematic control circuit, the arrangement being such that the process continues only if the shoe 85 picks-up a moulded article. The nozzles and the piston of the resin metering unit may be coupled by rack-and-pinion gearing, Selsyn motors being interposed if desired. The resin may be an alkyd resin mixture or a polyester mixture. |
